Delivery food service Blue Apron to go public, raise $100 million

[ad_1]

Meal delivery service and podcast advertising staple Blue Apron filed to go public on Thursday, marking the start of its journey to become a publicly traded company.

In doing so, the company officially revealed its finances for the first time. The subscription service pulled in nearly $800 million last year but lost around $55 million overall.

Despite the lack of profit, the company has been growing at a rapid clip overall; its revenue more than doubled in 2016 and grew fourfold the previous year. Even better, that rapid growth is outpacing its growth in losses.

The financials show other hopeful signs too. The company actually managed to turn a profit in the first quarter of last year, and, on the whole, the balance sheet has stayed relatively steady by the standards of money-burning tech startups.

At the same time, average order value and orders per customer haven't grown much in the past two years—and have actually declined slightly in recent months.

Founded in 2012, the company tapped into the subscription delivery boom with weekly shipments of meal kits stocked with pre-apportioned ingredients.

It made a name for itself with heavy marketing spend, perhaps most memorably in the advertising breaks of major podcasts. Last year the company spent $144 million on advertising.

It most recently undertook its first global TV ad campaign earlier this year as rumors swirled about an IPO.

The company was most recently valued at $2 billion after a $135 million funding round in 2015.

Trump toilet paper is here to clean up this political mess

[ad_1]

Image: tom pennington/Getty Images

Well, it looks like former businessman Donald Trump and his team forgot to trademark the Trump name on one very important product in Mexico: toilet paper.

On Thursday, The Associated Press reported that Antonio Battaglia, a corporate lawyer from Mexico, has created a Trump brand toilet paper featuring the amazingly topical slogans, "Softness without borders" and "This is the wall that, yes, we will pay for."

Battaglia is offended by Trump's insults and his plan to build a wall on the shared U.S. and Mexico border, but according to records, his trademark for the Trump toilet paper was actually approved by Mexico’s Institute of Industrial Property back in October 2015. So looks like he was wayyyy ahead of the game.

The institute has granted Trump’s organization various other trademarks for his name relating to construction, hotels, tourism, real estate, and financial services in Mexico, but alas, they forgot to cover "hygenic paper."

As you can see by Battaglia's mock-up illustration below, the Trump Paper packaging even features a toilet paper roll that resembles Trump — complete with squinting eyes and a golden hair flip, of course. The package also contains four "puros rollos" — a double-entendre that literally translates to "pure rolls" in Spanish but can be understood as "pure nonsense."

🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥

“My thinking was: We can’t keep quiet, right?” he told APwhile reflecting on Trump's controversial characterizations of migrants. "So with this insult that was made, [I figured] I’m going to add my grain of sand in response."

Packages of the toilet paper are expected to be produced later this year, and 30 percent of the profits will reportedly be donated  to programs supporting migrants.

We have a feeling Trump probably won't be too happy when he finds out that he's inspired a toilet paper brand ... or, hey, for all we know he could wind up dubbing it the best toilet paper in the world.

Walmart has employees deliver packages on their way home from work

[ad_1]

Image: joe raedle/Getty Images

Walmart is flexing its massive workforce in its quest to overtake Amazon.

The big box retailer is now paying store employees to drop off packages ordered online on their way home from work if a recipient happens to be in their area.

The program is in the testing phase for now, but Walmart's head of ecommerce, Marc Lore, said in the announcement that it could be a "game-changer."

The experiment is Walmart's latest bid to leverage the advantages it does have over Amazon — namely, its nearly 5,000 American stores and more than 1 million employees — to boost its growing online shopping business.

"Our stores put us within 10 miles of 90% of the U.S. population," Lore wrote in a blog post published Thursday. "Now imagine all the routes our associates drive to and from work and the houses they pass along the way."

The test is currently limited to two stores in New Jersey and one in Arkansas. Packages are shipped from Walmart's various fulfillment centers to the locations, where workers can volunteer to hand-deliver them by way of an employee app.

Lore said hundreds of packages have already been shipped through the program and, in many cases, in half the time guaranteed by Walmart's two-day shipping window.

Lore took over Walmart's online operations last year after the retailer bought Jet.com, the company he founded to take on Amazon.

Jet's central pitch for doing so was an algorithm that the company claimed could plot more efficient shipping and supply chain routes.

At Walmart, Lore has tapped Walmart's massive brick-and-mortar infrastructure to further speed up shipping times.

The company recently began offering a discount on any online shipment if customers picked it up at a store. It's also announced a two-day shipping guarantee for any order over $35 — an answer to a similar deal included in Amazon Prime membership.

Lore said the focus on efficiently calculating shipping routes would set Walmart's employee delivery pilot apart from other crowd-sourced efforts.

Walmart's newfound fixation on efficient shipping seems to be working. The store's e-commerce arm has grown significantly in the past two quarters.

Apple has paid out $70 billion to developers

[ad_1]

When Steve Jobs introduced Apple's App Store back in 2008, he introduced the developer-friendly platform with ... a free backgammon game.

Jobs called the system "pretty cool." Maybe not the hardest sell from a man famous for talking about how Apple products would change the world.

What he did stress, however, was the business side of the App Store. Developers would keep 70 percent of the revenue earned through their apps (Apple got the rest), with no fees attached. Free apps wouldn't cost their developers anything.

Nine years later, Apple is boasting about just how lucrative that deal ended up being.

Developers have now earned more than $70 billion through the App Store, Apple announced on Thursday in the run up to its Worldwide Developers Conference on June 5.

"Seventy billion dollars earned by developers is simply mind-blowing. We are amazed at all of the great new apps our developers create and can’t wait to see them again next week at our Worldwide Developers Conference," said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, in a press release.

Apple noted that among the biggest areas of recent growth has been for subscription services, which are up 58 percent in the past year. That might be the best news yet for companies that have worked to convince smartphone users to pay for content on their phones.

Apple also pushed back against that notion that apps have peaked and that people aren't downloading as many as the used to. Apple claimed that downloads have grown by 70 percent in the past year.

Yup, pretty cool indeed.

Tesla fires engineer who alleged sexual harassment, wage discrimination

[ad_1]

Image: G. Mabanglo/Epa/REX/Shutterstock

Tesla has fired an engineer who accused the high-tech auto manufacturer of wage discrimination and a pattern of ignoring sexual harassment, according to a report in The Guardian

AJ Vandermeyden, who filed a discrimination lawsuit last fall and went public with a Guardian interview in February, was fired from her role at the company.

“Despite repeatedly receiving special treatment at the expense of others, Ms Vandermeyden nonetheless chose to pursue a miscarriage of justice by suing Tesla and falsely attacking our company in the press,” a Tesla spokesperson said in a statement to The Guardian. “After we carefully considered the facts on multiple occasions and were absolutely convinced that Ms Vandermeyden’s claims were illegitimate, we had no choice but to end her employment at Tesla.”

Tesla didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Mashable

Vandermeyden told the Guardian that she experienced "unwelcome and pervasive harassment" including "inappropriate language, whistling and catcalls" at Tesla—problems that the company allegedly ignored.

She also said in her lawsuit that she was paid less than male engineers and outlined other kinds of workplace violations, including denial of overtime pay, rest breaks, and meal breaks while she worked in the sales department.

Tesla has faced accusations of labor violations from other employees. Tesla's HR chief left the company last week.

۳ way to detect online user in last seen recently mode telegram and ghost mod mobogram

start secret chat

در قسمت پایین این صفحه پیغام “Waiting for … to get online…”

wait

after onlining

one visit

stiker

two visit

two visit stiker

voice

MTV looks to Snapchat to reach the cool teens

[ad_1]

MTV is gearing up to hook a new generation: the Snapchat kids.

The channel that once defined cool on TV is bringing two of its shows to the teen-heavy app. "Cribs" will premiere June 3 and run every Saturday, and "Girl Code" will launch July 27.

MTV's "Cribs" making a comeback isn't breaking news. MTV had announced the classic's return as a Snapchat show back in April 2016. At the time, it was expected to launch that June, with guests Mac Miller, Austin Mahone, and Travis Mills.

More than a year later, MTV is finally bringing Snapchat users into artists' homes. The first episode will feature DJ and producer Steve Aoki followed by Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller, and professional skateboarder Nyjah Huston. The weekly shows are produced exclusively for Snapchat, meaning vertical-only and between three and five minutes per episode.

"It should feel 2017," said Garth Bardsley, VP of original video at MTV Digital. "When you see it, it'll feel very much like 'Cribs,' and it will show that we shot for that platform. There’s maybe a little less bling. People don’t care that much about bling and care more about stories."

The rollout comes as both MTV and Snapchat have matured. Snap Inc. is now a publicly-traded company, and MTV is facing the despair of most cable networks: declining viewership. The time both media networks have spent on the project is significant.

Snapchat "could be the first place that they ever encounter MTV, so it's important for us to have premium channels," said Thomas Fishman, senior vice president of growth and engagement at MTV Digital. "As an iconic franchise, we have a deep loyalty. We wanted to launch it as soon as we could but we wanted to make sure that we checked all the boxes."

Snapchat, indeed, is where the kids are—and that's who MTV still identifies with. Teens spend far less time watching TV these days, meaning MTV has had to change with the times.

"Our mission statement, for us internally, we’re thinking about how to engage and entertain a youth audience, everything from escapism to activism," Fishman said.

"At our core MTV is concerned with reaching a young audience at scale in a way that’s relevant," Fishman continued.

When MTV first announced the shows back in April 2016, the entire concept was brand new. Now, Snapchat has about one Show airing every day and more than 100 in development. Other series include Vertical Network's "Phone Swap," A&E's "Second Chance," as well as Snapchat versions of NBC's "World of Dance" and ABC's "The Bachelor."

But MTV is far from new to the platform. It was among first TV networks on the app and worked closely with Snapchat's "small crew of people that were meant to be media liaisons," Fishman said in the app's early days.

MTV's account is followed every day by a "few million people," according to Fishman. As Snapchat added new features—Our Stories in June 2014 and Discover in January 2016—MTV was all in.

"I have to give them credit," Fishman said. "They have a very uniquely content-first approach to running what is ultimately a huge communication network so the sense is we are partners."

MTV didn't launch on the U.S. version of Discover, at first. Snapchat, Fishman said, was looking for just 12 partners. MTV's parent company Viacom began conversations and last year announced a multi-year agreement that includes Viacom selling U.S. advertising for Snapchat.

For MTV, the network is riding a wave of new announcements. It just wrapped up its annual MTV Movie Awards and also relaunched "Fear Factor," hosted by Ludacris.

"We're at this point where we were making a lot of noise," Fishman said. "We try to line these up to make sure we’re staying culturally relevant."

When it came to Snapchat Shows, MTV saw the relevance. "On Shows, it's one more platform to connect. Now it's, 'Okay, how do we want to talk to our audience?" Bardsley said.

It's not just about being there. MTV also sells advertising against their Our Stories and Discover channel. That's probably not enough money to move the needle for a company like MTV, but it's an important entry into the high-end digital market that is looking to grab TV ad dollars.

"All those in our ad sale worlds become super-valuable packages," Fishman said. There's an "awesome multi-pronged sense of the brand we bring our ad partners."

But isn't Snapchat over? Facebook, the network with nearly 2 billion people, is gearing up to launch its own original shows. In fact, Facebook hired Mina Lefevre, formerly a vice president at MTV, to help lead the development of these shows.

MTV is still hooked. "Snapchat has never been a question to us here," Bardsley said. "The rest of it is out there in the press and the ether, but we believe in the product and the partnership. The truth is in 100s of millions of daily active users, and we can express ourselves creatively."

"There's perspective on the competition between the platforms for business and trade, but if you're a kid, they all occupy different places in your life. If you’re a particular type of person you might gravitate toward a handful. For us, the audience is there."

Some genius is adding googly eyes to rusty street objects in Bulgaria

[ad_1]

A face tempered like steel.
A face tempered like steel.

Image: Eyebombing bulgaria

Post-socialist cities like Sofia in Bulgaria, aren't known for their architectural diversity. They tend to be a bit monotonous. And rusty. Very rusty.

But when you add googly eyes (aka eyebombing) to cities rumbling ruins gain a certain charm.

OOO-ways look on the bright side of life.

OOO-ways look on the bright side of life.

Image: Eyebombing BUlgaria

Photographer Vanyu Krastev, 42, has been eyebombing Sofia over the past two years, breathing life in the most unexpected places.

His project got a flurry of attention in Bulgaria after an article in Bored Panda and now there are much more eyeballs on it (geddit?).

Waka waka waka waka.

Waka waka waka waka.

Image: eyebombing bulgaria

Krastev is hoping that it will develop into a grassroots movement, where people geolocate themselves moving around the city and follow the lead of other eyebombers.

A plastic smile.

A plastic smile.

Image: EYEBalling Bulgaria

Like many capital cities in Europe, parking is a nightmare In Sofia. There are cars everywhere. Especially sidewalks. So the city is littered with a variety of stony sculptures that function as barriers. What better place to put some googly eyes?

"You should see the other guy."

"You should see the other guy."

Image: EYebombing Bulgaria

And that's the point. Finding beauty in anything, both animate and inanimate, is a matter of perspective.

Krastev says he can't unsee that beauty anymore. The plastic googly eyes, just like the ones on most Sesame Street characters, are a filter through which he can mould the city and make it come to life.

An urban Rorschach test.

An urban Rorschach test.

Image: EYEBOMBING BULGARIA

"I bought a few of these plastic eyes and decided to try it in Sofia. I noticed no one had done it before (in Bulgaria) and I went from there," Krastev said.

"The more eyes I stuck on things, the better I became. I got a sort of flair for it. Nowadays, I don't even need to go on a specific 'eybombing hunt' around Sofia. The little creatures just kind of pop out all around me."

"I may be rusty, but I'm still beautiful."

"I may be rusty, but I'm still beautiful."

Image: eyebombing bulgaria

Krastev was inspired by the two Danish masters of the street art initiative, who describe it as an "effort to define and refine a largely neglected and overlooked" part of everyday life – the urban aesthetic.

And their methodology is simple – create weirdly gleeful creatures from inanimate objects, which in turn bring equally wide smiles to people passing by.

"Don't look down on me."

"Don't look down on me."

Image: EYEBOMBING BULGARIA

Sofia is a particularly good canvas for this sort of installation because the best eyebombing works with things that are "broken, ruptured, punctured, tangled, crumbling, or twisted," Krastev says. "You are, in a way, humanizing them."

These's an abundance in the city and once you look at them through the googly eyes filter, it's kind of an inspiration.

"Cookie, cookie, cookie, cookie!"

"Cookie, cookie, cookie, cookie!"

A real mouthful.

Proof that beauty and life is everywhere.

7 traits of successful leaders who break barriers to create opportunity

[ad_1]

Not long ago, one of my employees referred to me as a "bulldozer." It didn't sound great at first, but after listening to his reasoning, it became clear that he meant it as a compliment. Whether you're a CEO or a president, a business development officer or an employee at any level, you're going to have to get past major barriers to accomplish goals and create opportunity for your company. And to get past those barriers, you need a bulldozer.

That said, it's hard to encourage anyone to be a bulldozer because, simply put, it's really hard to break through some barriers. It takes more than wearing a bulldozer badge to get yourself on the path to success; you've got to truly hone your skills to get past those hard-to-break-through barriers and build lasting trust.

As I've studied those in my network, as well as partners, employees, and fellow company leaders who have the ability to knock down trust barriers, I've discovered some common traits. Here are the seven characteristics of people who expertly destroy trust barriers:

1. They are confident in their abilities.

This might age me a bit, but I compare this characteristic to "The Dukes of Hazzard." If Bo and Luke were constantly thinking they couldn't make a big jump in their car, I'm certain they would have crashed a lot more. You have to believe you can make the big jump, too. Now, I don't mean you should be naive about it. You've got to put in the work to build your skills before you can believe they'll take you to the goal you want to achieve. Once you put in the work, have confidence in your abilities.

2. They don’t get embarrassed easily.

I don't know whether it's just me getting older, but I hardly ever feel embarrassed anymore. And when I look at other people who are able to build strong business relationships, create opportunity, and dominate their industries, they're typically fine with a little bit of awkwardness or discomfort, too. You have to be able to put yourself out there without worrying about how you might look to others, and don't let yourself become distracted by embarrassment or dwell on mistakes.

3. They value the relationship above all.
I'm sure you've known people who help you out and then immediately ask for something in return. I've run into my share of those contacts myself. But the people who get past my trust barriers (which are typically pretty strong) are the ones who help for the sake of being helpful. They value relationships and put the time into nurturing them; they're not interested in short-term wins at the expense of a mutually helpful, long-term relationship.

4. They brand themselves and build credibility around their companies.

No matter how old you are or how far away from that middle school gymnasium you get, you can still feel like the kid picked last in dodgeball when your brand is weak and no one in your industry knows who you are. You'll get passed up for opportunities the same way you got passed up for dodgeball.

In my experience, if you aren't making the kinds of connections you're looking for, it's because no one knows you or why they should trust you. So invest in your own brand to build familiarity with your audience and influence in your industry — that's how people break down trust barriers.

5. They don’t think what everybody else is thinking.

Part of the reason people put up barriers is to keep out unoriginal and disingenuous people who haven't earned their trust. So if you want to get around those barriers, you can't just do what everyone else is already doing; you've got to think creatively. One of my friends who runs a print magazine was having trouble getting a university official to respond to a simple email, and I told him to customize one issue toward that person next time to grab his attention. Not everybody has the ability to personalize an issue of a known publication. It completely differentiated him.

6. They take risks.

Some of the biggest opportunities often come as a result of the biggest risks. For example, a friend of mine flew across the country to GE's office and waited six hours outside the office just to potentially get his foot in the door for a meeting. That kind of risk took guts, especially because the outcome wasn't guaranteed to be successful. But he ended up getting his meeting. People who break barriers know that if you don't take risks or put yourself out there, you'll never know the full potential of what you're capable of doing for yourself and your company.

7. They have strong support.

At a construction site, a bulldozer is just one part of the project. It still needs a crew of other machines to clean up and build on the site. Fortunately, I have a strong co-founder and a team with complementary operational strengths. Together, we're able to push our company forward. Breaking through barriers isn't the end result; it's vital to create a support structure to help you accomplish your goals once you've cleared the path. Otherwise, you're just creating a mess.

Do you exhibit any of these characteristics? Take a hard look at yourself and the way you approach your business, and be honest with yourself. Truly, these seven traits are what set successful leaders apart from those who stay trapped behind trust barriers.
