Twitch played Pokémon. Twitch played Dark Souls. And now, Twitch is playing... the stock market.
StockStream gives Twitch users a chance to move actual money around every day on the New York Stock Exchange. It's funded — to start with, at least — by $50,000 provided by the stream's owner.
"This is all just my money," StockStream's owner, a software developer named Mike, told PC Gamer. "I saved it up, and as for as who benefits it’ll just be me. I mean, I’m taking all the risks."
Fair, Mike. Tooooootally fair.
StockStream runs every day while the NYSE market is open, with activity divided up around 5-minute voting rounds. At the end of each voting period, the top "buy" or "sell" command is pushed through and a single share of stock is bought or sold.
For those wishing to participate, all of the instructions are included on StockStream's Twitch page. In addition to buy and sell commands, players — this is a cooperative multiplayer game, after all — can also find out what music is playing and look at trading activity.
There are a few rules that all players must abide by. Only stocks available through the Robinhood app are fair game, as that's the broker StockStream uses. Further, the game will end if the account value falls below $25,000; per StockStream's website, that's due entirely to FINRA/SEC regulations.
In its current form, StockStream offers no reward to players other than the satisfaction of a job well done. Though as Mike notes on the website, "in the future prizes may be offered to players with high scores."
Amazingly, this isn't even the first time Twitch users have been given the chance to play in the investment world. A TwitchPlaysStockMarket account has been dormant since 2015, but — based on the rules printed on its account page — it seemed to work in a similar manner.
There was one big difference, however: it didn't rely on real money.
When it launched in 2013, AirHelp made a simple promise: Report your flight disasters to the company’s customer service agents, and they’ll litigate against airlines on your behalf. You don’t have to pay a penny—unless they manage to get you a settlement. And when they do, the service takes a 25 percent cut. Simple.
On Tuesday, the three-year-old company is taking its next step toward seamless airline compensation with an expansion of its namesake app. Offered free on the iTunes and Android Play stores, the app used to require that travelers fill out a short survey and provide a description of their issue to initiate a claim; now, travelers can simply scan an image of their boarding pass and let AirHelp take care of the rest. With the information from your boarding pass stored in the AirHelp system, the company can track your flight for delays, cancelations, and overbooking so claims can get rolling before you pick up the phone.
“Before we came along, people didn’t know about their rights at all,” said AirHelp Chief Executive Officer Henrik Zillmer. “Most people don’t know the law—and even if they did, they might not know what they’re entitled to. It’s actually very complicated, and that’s why we exist.” Now, roughly one in three Europeans is aware of air passenger rights, according to Zillmer. “We still have a huge educational learning curve ahead of us.”
To date, AirHelp has processed claims for 2 million air passengers for a total compensation of $195 million. (Zillmer said the average payout runs from $500 to $600, often divided among multiple family members flying together and filing a joint claim.) The boarding pass scanner, he said, will make it easier to help more people more efficiently.
“Now we can instantly tell you how the laws are applied in your circumstance and what the airline owes you in your situation,” said Zillmer of the feature, saying it takes just two or three seconds to file a claim. Though the process was never terribly cumbersome, he says that every additional survey question prompts drop off, and automatic tracking means passengers will get pop-up notifications when they’re eligible for compensation. All they have to do is give AirHelp permission—with one tap—to go after their case. “It’s like AAA for air passengers,” joked Zillmer.
So what are you entitled to? If you’re flying into, out of, or within Europe—or on a Europe-based carrier—chances are you’re entitled to more than you think. In those cases, travelers are entitled to as much as 600 euros ($670) for flight delays, depending on the length of the delay and the travel distance.
Regulations in the U.S. are less generous towards passengers. Domestic travelers aren’t subject to compensation for traditional flight delays—but tarmac delays and involuntary boarding denials (which happen when your flight is oversold and you’re forced to give up your seat) can warrant a payout of up to $1,350. So do lost, delayed, or damaged luggage claims—for which AirHelp can secure up to $1,220 in reparations. The catch, said Zillmer, is that you need receipts to show the value of what was inside your luggage if anything has gone missing.
Elsewhere, legislation varies. But AirHelp, which offered support only for European flights at its inception, can now handle claims in more than 30 countries around the world—and in 15 languages. (The company breaks down regional differences in clear terms here.)
The average claim is resolved in two to three months, said Zillmer. And just as in its early days, the company will settle up with its customers by taking 25 percent of any secured compensation. When claims require full-blown legal action, the cut jumps to 50 percent—but consumers are not required to pay out of pocket to be represented in court.
No matter what AirHelp takes, though, you’re likely to get far more with its assistance than you will on your own. “You can submit your own claims and never hear back,” explained Zillmer. “And then, when you finally hear back, you are likely to be rejected. The airlines speculate you’ll forget about it rather than invest in legal action.” That’s not how it tends to play out when AirHelp is on the front lines. “We’ve sued airlines more than 30,000 times and won 95 percent of those claims,” Zillmer said. “So the airlines know that if we submit a claim, there’s just no way around it.”

Here's what we know about robots: Robots have taken jobs. Robots are taking jobs. Robots will take jobs.
The question remains, though: How many jobs? Hard to say.
Analysts, futurists, and academics vary in their assessment of just how many jobs (and perhaps more importantly which jobs) are at risk, but they generally all agree: things are going to change.
So, with automation and artificial intelligence threatening to eliminate millions of jobs in the coming decades, should you be worried about the impending robot job revolution? There's a website that will try to answer that question.
Aptly titled "Will Robots Take My Job?" the site provides an easy way to get a sense of what jobs are most at risk.
Using a 2013 report from the University of Oxford, the website provides an estimate of how much any particular job is at risk of disappearing due to "computerisation."
"We extracted the jobs and the probability of automation from the report and have made it easy to search for your job. We’ve added some additional information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to provide some additional information about the jobs," the website's authors note on the site.
Just type in a job and the website provides a particular series of employment types. Click on one and get ready for bad news.
The website is the brainchild of Mubashar Iqbal and Dimitar Raykov, who launched the website on Tuesday.
Posting on Product Hunt, Iqbal said the website went from concept to reality in just a few weeks.
Ironically, the website itself is, in some ways, a robot...

Amazon seems to want its smartphone app to span more than just traditional online shopping.
As its customers have spilled into the mobile space, the e-commerce giant has turned its flagship app into something of a testing ground for the small-screen shopping experience of the future. It now boasts a slew of experimental features beyond Amazon's standard store listings—some of which are impressive and potentially game-changing, others puzzling and superfluous.
Among other things, you can solicit personalized fashion feedback from live stylists, judge items against your home decor in augmented reality, or immediately link to the Amazon page of any real-world object with the point of a camera.
More than seven in ten of Amazon's customers now shop from their smartphones, and a growing portion do so within the app, the company said at the end of last year.
Those are formidable numbers considering that consumers by and large remain stubbornly set in their desktop ways. Despite rapid growth and a dominant share of browsing activity, mobile shopping accounts for only one fifth of all sales industry-wide, according to comScore's most recent report. Surveys show that shoppers are generally deterred by the confines of small screens, clunky sites and app layouts, and security worries.
The latter two obstacles are less of a concern for Amazon, which boasts a streamlined, whip-fast interface bolstered by one-click ordering as well as the implicit trust of its users.
No matter how big Amazon might grow its mobile business, though, the physical dimensions of a smartphone aren't going to change.
Amazon might have a way around that. Some of the recent additions to the app seem like they have the potential to bypass size-related limitations in their own way, however.
Augmented reality tools allow customers to transcend the display boundaries of the screen, and Alexa—the company's automated digital assistant—lets them circumvent cramped on-screen navigation. Amazon's fashion features in particular seem tailor-made to confront the big-screen preference that weighs on mobile's relatively small share of online apparel sales.
As the indisputable heavyweight of the online shopping market, Amazon's app is the front lines of where mobile shopping as a whole might be headed.
Here are some of the company's more out-there offerings:
A mystery Snapchat knock-off
Snapchat mimicry is such a hot trend in the tech world that even Amazon's throwing its hat in the ring.
The latest—and most head-scratching—feature introduced into its app is a set of "shoppable" stickers to decorate photos taken within the app, the same way you might in Snapchat.
The graphics each depict an actual product from Amazon's site, but beyond that, it's not entirely clear why they exist.
Amazon doesn't have a social component, so once the sticker-plastered photo is taken, the app prompts you to share through other channels. It doesn't give any indication as to what point there might be in doing so.
The stickers, which are are organized into collections by categories like "home," "gold," "fun,"and "gadgets," are presumably meant to help people find new products, but that purpose still doesn't explain the whimsical set-up or the intended use.
It's possible that the feature could be used to gauge how well a particular item matches a given setting; perhaps if someone wanted to configure the Feng shui of a room before a purchase. The cartoonish white border around each sticker isn't well-suited to that purpose, though.
Amazon itself may not even know exactly where it's going with the tool. Perhaps it's waiting to see what people do with it.
In any case, messing around with the feature is oddly addicting, whatever its purpose may be.
Fashion advice
Clothes sales still mostly remain the province of stores or on desktop computers, more so than other retail categories.
Amazon has been pushing into the fashion business for years with its own designer brands and a short-lived QVC-like video shopping channel (which just recently shut down).
Its latest mobile tool in this vein is a close second to the stickers in terms of peculiarity.
The "Outfit Compare" feature, which is currently only available to Prime members, lets users upload side-by-side photos of themselves in two different outfits. Within a few minutes, Amazon's fashion specialists—whom Amazon guarantees have background in the field—will return a verdict as to which is the better overall match.
Amazon says its responses, delivered in a three-point scale from "Definitely pick this one!" to "We like this better" and "It was a close call," account for fit, color, style, and trends of the moment.
Photo identification
One of the most useful, if not exactly new, features within Amazon's app is its image recognition tool.
Simply point the in-app camera at any marketable object and Amazon will pull up a product listings within seconds.
Unlike more gimmicky similar tools, the software is surprisingly accurate, regardless of angle, lighting, and other potentially derailing factors.
Offbeat suggestions
In a retail world inundated with endless options, well-executed curation of products has become an invaluable commodity.
Amazon's data troves have always led the industry in terms of hyper-personalized recommendations and related items.
But discoverability—the surfacing of relevant products to new prospective buyers—has long been a blindspot of online shopping.
Amazon is combatting that problem in part with a new section of themed product collections within the app.
The "Interesting finds" tab showcases hand-picked products tied to themes both practical ("home" and "gadgets") as well as more conceptual ("fun" and "mid-century"). The same categories are used to organize the stickers. The layout and sensibility has a similar feel to that of Pinterest.
Unlike the majority of Amazon's product recommendations, the lists are created by human stylists rather than algorithms.
