It's time to destroy startup-style workaholism once and for all

[ad_1]

There's a debate raging in Silicon Valley this week that you should really know about.

Though it may look like just a few heated Twitter exchanges and at least one scathing blog post, it's really a high-profile fight over who gets to decide how we value work in the 21st century.

We can probably all agree that dedicated, diligent employees are essential for any workplace, but some people argue for more — they want you to become a workaholic, singularly obsessed with achieving the company's mission.

This is no small difference, and you probably feel the repercussions in your everyday life. You may be an industrious soul, devising creative solutions for whatever problems come your way, and are happy to devote your talent and time to your employer. But you might also resent the fact that your days are long — so long that you rarely get to wind down with a bike ride, see close friends, or even spend time with your kids.

On Monday, Blake Robbins, an associate at the venture capital firm Ludlow, gave voice to such experiences, daring to challenge the culture of workaholism that pervades the startup world.

"When I first got into tech. I thought it was 'cool' to work on the weekends or holidays," Robbins tweeted. "I quickly realized that's a recipe for disaster." In a follow-up post he added, "I promise you...your competition isn't beating you because they are working more hours than you. It's because they are working smarter."

The remarks were sensible personal observations, but an hour later entrepreneur and investor Keith Rabois‏ issued a two-word rebuttal: "Totally false."

At first, the thread launched a conversation among male entrepreneurs mostly on the merits of nonstop work, and soon more skeptical people, including women, started to weigh in. Some clearly felt invested in the status quo, while others were alarmed by it.

The workaholism at the center of this debate demands that you take an endless string of sacrifices in stride — as if a full-tilt obsession with work, to the exclusion of all else, is the only path to success. It ignores the reality that a person can be passionate, persistent, and hard-working and also find fulfillment in other aspects of life. Indeed, that satisfaction probably enhances their vision in ways that are difficult to quantify. The overbearing philosophy of workaholism, which is rooted in macho stereotypes about what hard work should look like, also conveniently leaves out some difficult facts.

First, that model of work in corporate America was pioneered by white men whose wives, often with aid from domestic workers, took care of running a household. Without such an arrangement, it would be literally impossible to work long hours or around the clock and have any caregiving responsibilities. And yet we continue to pretend that a "strong" work ethic requires nothing but your own iron will.

Second, workaholism is costly, even if you think the brute force of racking up hours in the office or on the road will inevitably yield innovation and success. What often happens instead is burnout, which can become an expensive problem for a company. A culture that promotes relentless work also sidelines a lot of talented women. They may feel that in order to be competitive with their male peers they must leave their kids in daycare for nine hours so that a nanny or grandparent (if they even have that support) can put them to bed, and decide that worshipping at the altar of workaholism isn't for them.

A work culture that values how many hours you put in above all else also sets up the perverse expectation that men, by nature, won't care as much about spending quality time with their children, that it's expendable if the money or opportunity is right. And, hey, it might be for some men and women, but this is exactly how we end up with a less-than-diverse workforce.

Women of color, in particular, are effectively penalized twice by a philosophy of professional work created by white men. That myopic vision about which candidates are a good "culture fit" often leave women of color out of the picture, and when they do break through that barrier, they must still reckon with the practical challenges of having a family or a personal life at a company that thinks both of those things should come second to your work. This isn't just a personal matter: Research has found that a more diverse staff is more likely to produce better financial returns.

This old-fashioned approach to productivity and creativity rests on a laundry list of assumptions about who you're hiring and who's holding down the home front. And even if someone's wife or partner has her own job, the societal expectation is that she'll drop off and pick up the kids, take them to their doctor's appointments, and volunteer for field trips.

Workaholism perpetuates a macho vision of what the most valuable efforts should look like: grueling, never-ending, and capable of destroying your competition. These ideas didn't just materialize from the ether. They're engrained in how we're taught to value the work that men and women do, but they're also a special feature of the startup world.

As David Heinemeier Hansson, cofounder and chief technology officer of Basecamp, pointed out in his blog post about workaholism, venture capital "money men" set these expectations by trying to "compress a lifetime's worth of work into the abbreviated timeline of a venture fund."

While Silicon Valley companies like Facebook and Google fret about how to increase the number of women in their ranks, few leaders in tech would suggest shortening the work day for the same pay.  Such a strategy probably looks like an invitation to employees to take their jobs less seriously, even if it might help attract and retain more diverse talent.

"The status quo survived in tact with some modifications. Those concessions make it easier, but you still work the same, if not longer, hours."

People should be offended, angry even, that they have to defend their desire to spend even a few hours a day with their loved ones. For single or childless workers, the burden is different but still punishing: Without the borderline acceptable excuse of missing a meeting or coming in late because they needed to tend to a child, they instead feel the pressure to have no personal life at all.

That parents haven't revolted against an average work day that's getting longer and now stands at 8.8 hours is worth reflecting on. While it may not seem like a long day, it's certainly longer than most school days and day care availability when you also factor in the time it takes to commute.

The silence about this logistical nightmare probably has something to do with the long shadow of the Great Recession, which gave companies more power to wield over employees nervous about being laid off.

Yet there's also the long march of white women entering the professional workforce during the 1970s and '80s; to challenge the length of a work day widely accepted by one's males peers would be to admit defeat in the hoary "can she have it all?" debate.

Instead, the women who stayed in those jobs found individual workarounds to spend time with their family, or simply decided not to be as present as they once hoped. The status quo survived in tact with some modifications, like remote work and flex-scheduling. Those concessions make it easier, but you still work the same, if not longer, hours.

The truth is that our system for valuing work and appraising the contributions of talented, dedicated employees is broken because it places so much emphasis on time. What we need are companies and business leaders open to the idea that a macho work culture actually holds them back and may even hurt their long-term chances for success. (See Travis Kalanick's Uber troubles, if you need more convincing.)

We need businesses that are willing to experiment with new ways of measuring creativity and productivity. Most of all, we desperately need senior leaders and mid-level managers to show their employees every day that it's acceptable — even encouraged — for them to have outside pursuits, including families. Defending workaholism at this point demonstrates a tremendous lack of imagination about what people can achieve when they're fulfilled at both work and home.

But there's something arguably more sinister happening beneath the surface of that apologism. People who justify workaholism often can't admit that many of America's favorite heroes — renowned for their relentless work ethic — built their achievements and empires on the backs of women and domestic workers, not to mention the innumerable sacrifices of employees who might not have been paid fairly and spent far too much time away from their families.

If that sounds quaint or naive, it's time to rethink why you work so hard in the first place. Sure, it feels good to dedicate yourself to a mission or calling, and great if you can make money while doing so. But if we happily comply with the idea that gifted visionaries are within their rights to ask us to forgo our full humanity in pursuit of their fame and fortune, that ultimately means we trade in countless precious moments with our loved ones so that someone else can become a legend.

It's long past time to strike a better bargain for ourselves.

Longchamp and Burberry have set up stores on WeChat, China's top messenger app

[ad_1]

Besides chatting with friends and idly thumbing through their social feeds, you can now buy luxury bags off China's largest social app, WeChat.

The country's most popular messenger app — which boasted nearly 900 million daily users last year — is so ubiquitous that luxury brands like Longchamp and Burberry are jumping onboard, reports the Wall Street Journal.

Big brands like Louis Vuitton, Givenchy and Dior are also testing demand through flash sales.

Early adopter, Longchamp, has already launched two in-app stores. One allows people to create customised products from the French maker, and the other allows people to post their experiences with Longchamp's physical stores.

"We've seen the importance of WeChat," Jean Cassegrain, Longchamp's CEO, told Interface, a Chinese tech publication. The company found that WeChat pulled in a lot of sales, after earlier experiments with social media marketing in China.

WeChat seemed more effective than other e-commerce platforms, Cassegrain added. "One way or another, [WeChat] will significantly contribute to our sales."

WeChat is taking over everything

This validation for WeChat is a big deal. The app started out as a messenger before adding a Facebook-style timeline feature, allowing people to blast their lives to friends.

Today, you'd find WeChat's in-app wallet commonly used for transferring money to friends, as well as paying merchants of all sizes, from roadside stalls to big retail stores. This payment is often done by scanning a simple QR code.

But will that spending translate to big ticket items from luxury brands? That remains to be seen, say industry watchers.

Buying a $20,000 watch on your phone.

Pablo Mauron, managing director in China for Digital Luxury Group, a high-end digital marketing firm, said: "For the luxury industry, it's important not to fool ourselves...People want to touch the product."

"I'm still doubtful that someone that doesn't have a relationship with a brand will buy a $20,000 watch on WeChat."

Still, brands setting up WeChat stores creates a unique closed loop not seen in many other examples outside of China. This loop takes users from the initial contact with the brand, to the purchase, and straight through to a personalised customer service channel, observed Interface.

Not even Elon Musk could sway Trump on the Paris Agreement

[ad_1]

Image: PAUL SANCYA/AP/REX/SHUTTERSTOCK

Elon Musk has President Donald Trump's ear as a member of the White House's business advisory council, and he has not been afraid to use it to lobby him on key issues. One of those is global climate change.

And yet even Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX who has been pushing the world toward a future of renewable energy, was not able to sway the Trump administration to remain in the Paris Climate Agreement. This is based on multiple news reports on Wednesday stating the administration is about to withdraw from the landmark agreement.

The U.S. government's decision to pull out comes even after Musk last week tweeted his optimism:

It wasn't just Musk pushing the U.S. government to remain in the pact. Thirty CEOs of some of the world's largest companies co-signed an open letter to Trump earlier this month. Names included Richard Branson of Virgin Group, Marc Benioff of Salesforce, Jeffrey Immelt of General Electric, and Robert Iger of The Walt Disney Company.

"We are committed to working with you to create jobs and boost U.S. competitiveness, and we believe this can be best achieved by remaining in the Paris Agreement," read the letter.

Apple, Facebook, Google, and Microsoft were among the 24 companies who ran a similar letter as a full-page ad in the D.C. editions of the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post. This letter argued that the Paris Agreement helps America create jobs and reduces business risks related to global warming.

The Paris agreement is considered to be the world's most comprehensive plan to fight climate change. Former President Barack Obama was a driving force behind negotiating the accord, which went into force in 2016.

The treaty is viewed by many government and corporate leaders as positive for businesses.

“If President Trump does pull out of the Paris climate agreement, I suspect he will be surprised how unpopular this decision will be with business," said Lord Mark Malloch-Brown, chair of the Business and Sustainable Development Commission and former deputy U.N. secretary-general, said prior to Wednesday's decision.

"This tilts things back in a way that is not just disruptive for business but potentially highly dangerous for all of us as citizens. Therefore he may be even more surprised to find how few take the chance to march backwards with him," he continued.

The Trump administration's move is yet another blow to Silicon Valley. The government has worked to limit and further dismantle the H-1B visa program, which companies like Facebook rely on to recruit foreign workers. The travel ban also spurred fierce opposition from tech giants.

Despite Trump inviting top tech leaders for a roundtable in December, he has done little to prove that he actually has the executives' best interests for a more sustainable future in mind.

It doesn't help that Peter Thiel, another tech whisperer in Trump's ear, holds climate views that are out of step with mainstream climate scientists.

Twitch plays the stock market using $50,000 of actual money

[ad_1]

Twitch played Pokémon. Twitch played Dark Souls. And now, Twitch is playing... the stock market.

StockStream gives Twitch users a chance to move actual money around every day on the New York Stock Exchange. It's funded — to start with, at least — by $50,000 provided by the stream's owner.

"This is all just my money," StockStream's owner, a software developer named Mike, told PC Gamer. "I saved it up, and as for as who benefits it’ll just be me. I mean, I’m taking all the risks."

Fair, Mike. Tooooootally fair.

StockStream runs every day while the NYSE market is open, with activity divided up around 5-minute voting rounds. At the end of each voting period, the top "buy" or "sell" command is pushed through and a single share of stock is bought or sold.

For those wishing to participate, all of the instructions are included on StockStream's Twitch page. In addition to buy and sell commands, players — this is a cooperative multiplayer game, after all — can also find out what music is playing and look at trading activity.

There are a few rules that all players must abide by. Only stocks available through the Robinhood app are fair game, as that's the broker StockStream uses. Further, the game will end if the account value falls below $25,000; per StockStream's website, that's due entirely to FINRA/SEC regulations.

In its current form, StockStream offers no reward to players other than the satisfaction of a job well done. Though as Mike notes on the website, "in the future prizes may be offered to players with high scores."

Amazingly, this isn't even the first time Twitch users have been given the chance to play in the investment world. A TwitchPlaysStockMarket account has been dormant since 2015, but — based on the rules printed on its account page — it seemed to work in a similar manner.

There was one big difference, however: it didn't rely on real money.

Flight delay? Get reimbursed with this clever app

[ad_1]

When it launched in 2013, AirHelp made a simple promise: Report your flight disasters to the company’s customer service agents, and they’ll litigate against airlines on your behalf. You don’t have to pay a penny—unless they manage to get you a settlement. And when they do, the service takes a 25 percent cut. Simple.

On Tuesday, the three-year-old company is taking its next step toward seamless airline compensation with an expansion of its namesake app. Offered free on the iTunes and Android Play stores, the app used to require that travelers fill out a short survey and provide a description of their issue to initiate a claim; now, travelers can simply scan an image of their boarding pass and let AirHelp take care of the rest. With the information from your boarding pass stored in the AirHelp system, the company can track your flight for delays, cancelations, and overbooking so claims can get rolling before you pick up the phone.

“Before we came along, people didn’t know about their rights at all,” said AirHelp Chief Executive Officer Henrik Zillmer. “Most people don’t know the law—and even if they did, they might not know what they’re entitled to. It’s actually very complicated, and that’s why we exist.” Now, roughly one in three Europeans is aware of air passenger rights, according to Zillmer. “We still have a huge educational learning curve ahead of us.”

To date, AirHelp has processed claims for 2 million air passengers for a total compensation of $195 million. (Zillmer said the average payout runs from $500 to $600, often divided among multiple family members flying together and filing a joint claim.) The boarding pass scanner, he said, will make it easier to help more people more efficiently.

“Now we can instantly tell you how the laws are applied in your circumstance and what the airline owes you in your situation,” said Zillmer of the feature, saying it takes just two or three seconds to file a claim. Though the process was never terribly cumbersome, he says that every additional survey question prompts drop off, and automatic tracking means passengers will get pop-up notifications when they’re eligible for compensation. All they have to do is give AirHelp permission—with one tap—to go after their case. “It’s like AAA for air passengers,” joked Zillmer.

So what are you entitled to? If you’re flying into, out of, or within Europe—or on a Europe-based carrier—chances are you’re entitled to more than you think. In those cases, travelers are entitled to as much as 600 euros ($670) for flight delays, depending on the length of the delay and the travel distance.

Regulations in the U.S. are less generous towards passengers. Domestic travelers aren’t subject to compensation for traditional flight delays—but tarmac delays and involuntary boarding denials (which happen when your flight is oversold and you’re forced to give up your seat) can warrant a payout of up to $1,350. So do lost, delayed, or damaged luggage claims—for which AirHelp can secure up to $1,220 in reparations. The catch, said Zillmer, is that you need receipts to show the value of what was inside your luggage if anything has gone missing.

Elsewhere, legislation varies. But AirHelp, which offered support only for European flights at its inception, can now handle claims in more than 30 countries around the world—and in 15 languages. (The company breaks down regional differences in clear terms here.)

The average claim is resolved in two to three months, said Zillmer. And just as in its early days, the company will settle up with its customers by taking 25 percent of any secured compensation. When claims require full-blown legal action, the cut jumps to 50 percent—but consumers are not required to pay out of pocket to be represented in court.

No matter what AirHelp takes, though, you’re likely to get far more with its assistance than you will on your own. “You can submit your own claims and never hear back,” explained Zillmer. “And then, when you finally hear back, you are likely to be rejected. The airlines speculate you’ll forget about it rather than invest in legal action.” That’s not how it tends to play out when AirHelp is on the front lines. “We’ve sued airlines more than 30,000 times and won 95 percent of those claims,” Zillmer said. “So the airlines know that if we submit a claim, there’s just no way around it.”

Will a robot take your job? This website provides an answer (that you probably won't like)

[ad_1]

Here's what we know about robots: Robots have taken jobs. Robots are taking jobs. Robots will take jobs.

The question remains, though: How many jobs? Hard to say.

Analysts, futurists, and academics vary in their assessment of just how many jobs (and perhaps more importantly which jobs) are at risk, but they generally all agree: things are going to change.

So, with automation and artificial intelligence threatening to eliminate millions of jobs in the coming decades, should you be worried about the impending robot job revolution? There's a website that will try to answer that question.

Aptly titled "Will Robots Take My Job?" the site provides an easy way to get a sense of what jobs are most at risk.

Using a 2013 report from the University of Oxford, the website provides an estimate of how much any particular job is at risk of disappearing due to "computerisation."

"We extracted the jobs and the probability of automation from the report and have made it easy to search for your job. We’ve added some additional information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to provide some additional information about the jobs," the website's authors note on the site.

Just type in a job and the website provides a particular series of employment types. Click on one and get ready for bad news.

The website is the brainchild of Mubashar Iqbal and Dimitar Raykov, who launched the website on Tuesday.

Posting on Product Hunt, Iqbal said the website went from concept to reality in just a few weeks.

Ironically, the website itself is, in some ways, a robot...
