$3.37.
That's the meager median wage Uber and Lyft drivers make per hour, according to a paper published by MIT's Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research that surveyed over 1,000 drivers in the United States.
The study made headlines this week, revealing that the cost of insurance, fuel, and car maintenance all played a major impact on why those who drive for ride-share companies do not meet minimum wage.
Despite the compelling findings, Uber's CEO Dara Khosrowshahi is refuting the study's results himself, on Twitter of all places.
"MIT = Mathematically Incompetent Theories (at least as it pertains to ride-sharing)," Khosrowshahi tweeted, before linking to a report from Uber's chief economist that compiles all the positive surveys and studies done by the likes of The Rideshare Guy, Princeton, and Stanford.
Khosrowshahi's petty tweet shutting down the MIT study prompted plenty of questions and backlash on Twitter, many calling him out for the unprofessional response.

always impressed to see an argument founded on the notion that MIT is mathematically incompetent, when you employ many alumni and you can thank MIT for the internet you used to tweet this.

Here’s the Uber CEO telling you not to trust the MIT kids to do math, trust “The Rideshare Guy”, who Uber pays to refer drivers. https://t.co/kHuSqABAA2

One of the most telling parts about this is in the comments. About 90% of the comments below Dara’s tweet are negative.
Not a good sentiment. https://t.co/uzOdRrTMZq

This mocking approach in criticizing the MIT report is not professional and it reminds me of calling the media “fake news” by someone. I don’t think Uber wants to go down the same way. You better present a professional response based on facts and data.

If MIT is full of mathematical incompetence these days, well, maybe we can all start getting around on flying pigs instead of in the cars of underpaid rideshare drivers.
